Quillwork Workshops
My workshops are beginner-friendly and focus on creating small, meaningful projects such as medallions, pins, hair barrettes, earrings, and ornaments. These sessions introduce participants to the foundational techniques of porcupine quillwork in a supportive, culturally grounded environment and are ideal for community groups, organizations, schools, and youth programs.
While I share the basics of quillwork, I do not offer advanced intensives, such as full quillwork basket-making. My workshops are intentionally designed to provide accessible, introductory teachings that honour the art while supporting cultural revitalization.
Who the Workshops Are For?My priority is to revive quillwork in Indigenous communities. These workshops are primarily intended for First Nations, Inuit, and Métis participants as a means to support cultural revitalization and help our people reconnect with an art form that was once nearly lost. I am committed to sharing this knowledge with our communities first, nurturing identity, pride, and creative expression. If necessary, I may consider other audiences on a case-by-case basis, depending on the context and intention.
What Participants will be guided through:
- The cultural significance and history of Anishinaabe quillwork
- Teachings around harvesting materials, including how quills are safely and respectfully removed from porcupines, and the techniques used in traditional and contemporary practice
- An introduction to the anatomy of a porcupine quill and how its structure affects washing, dyeing, and working with it
- The full process: washing, sorting, and dyeing quills
- Foundational techniques for beginner quillwork projects
- Anishinaabemowin vocabulary related to quillwork
- Hands-on creation of a small piece to take home
